One hundred forty-three laparoscopic procedures performed during 31 month period were reviewed to assess the effectiveness of laparoscopy in improving clinical diagnosis, effe ctive-therapy and avoiding major surgery. Obscure pelvic mass, infertility and suspicious ectopic pregnancy are the leading indications for laparoscopy in our institute. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The accuracy of the clinical diagnosis confirmed by laparoscopy was 61.5%. 2. The accuracy of the laparoscopic diagnosis confirmed by laparotomy was 97.4%. 3. 29.1% of patient in whom laparotomy was contemplated on clinical grounds, the use of laparoscopy precluded the need for more major surgery. 4. Bilateral tubal occlusion was noted at laparoscopy in 15(37.9%) of the 37 infertile patient, and in 8(21.9%) of the 37 infertile patient, normal appearing pelvic organs were seen. 5. In the 29 patients with suspicious ectopic pregnancy, 16(55.2%) were found to have ectopic pregnancy, and 11(37,9%) were interpreted as not ectopic pregnancy. The laparoscopy enabled us to avoid laparotomy on 11(37.9%) of the 29 suspicious ectopic prepnancy. 6. In the 32 patients with suspicious ovarian cyst, 20(62,5%) were found to have ovarian cyst, and 12(37.5%) were interpreted as not ovarian cyst. 7. Our study records a 10.5% incidence of endometriosis in total 143 diagnostic laparoscopy, but in the 37 infertile group, 16.2% incidence of endometriosis was recorded. 8. Varying degree of therapeutic procedures were performed on 26(18.2%) of the total 143 cases.
